Van jurk naar peplum

Dit frisse jurkje van modemerk DEPT heb ik al minimaal 8 jaar. Dat weet ik omdat dit leuke, hippe merk in 2012 is gestopt. Sindsdien bewaak ik elk overgebleven kledingstuk van DEPT met mijn hart. En, indien nodig, met naald en draad. Zoals deze leuke jurk die ik te weinig draag (te kort, beetje te strak om de heup, te... etc.) en die ik met weinig moeite omtoverde in een peplum top.

This brightly coloured dress by DEPT has been in my closet for at least 8 years. I know this, because sadly, in 2012 this hip and trendy brand was terminated, discontinued and finished (like a certain parrot once was). From then on, I guarded every remaining piece of DEPT-clothing with my heart. And needle and tread, if necessary. That is why I could not part from this cute (too tight, too short, too...) dress and easily turned it into something wearable again: a peplum top.

Stap 1
Mijn eerste idee was het bovenstuk af te knippen tot net onder het elastiek in de taille en daaraan de volant van de rok vast te maken. Helaas was het bovenstuk van de jurk net te kort daarvoor, ook met de volant van 13 cm eraan. Als ik dat zou doen, zou je, ondanks de volant, bij elke beweging mijn navel kunnen zien. En dat is alleen leuk als je 20 bent;). Daarom besloot ik de rok in te korten tot de juiste lengte, 18 cm onder de elastiek. het elastiek zou ervoor zorgen dat het gedeelte eronder een beetje als een schootje zou uitvallen, het gewenste peplum-effect. 

Meten is weten! Voorkomt teleurstellingen, en veroorzaakt ze ook...

My first plan was to cut off the top, just beneath the elastic in the waist. And to attach the volant of the skirt to the top. But, alas, the top was too short, even with the volant attached. If I would do that, my belly would show at every single movement. Which is only cute when you're 20;). So, I decided to cut off the skirt at the length I needed. The elastic would create the peplum-effect.

Stap 2
Na het opmeten was het tijd om te knippen. Deze stap vind ik altijd moeilijk. Het is zo definitief, zo onomkeerbaar, er is geen weg terug. Weet ik het zeker? In de laatste seconden komen allerlei beelden van de jurk voorbij. Het moment dat ik de jurk kocht (ik was zo blij), een paar momenten dat ik het droeg en de keren dat ik de jurk het laatste jaar paste en daarbij dacht: 'nee, toch maar niet'. Mmmmm, het is de juiste beslissing. Knippen maar...

After the measuring it was time for the actual cutting. Usually the step I dread the most. Cutting is so definitive, permanent. There's no way back. In a few seconds my life with this dress passed by. The joy when I bought it, the times I wore the dress, and why it stayed in my closet, for more than a year now. Yes, cutting is a good decision...

Stap 3
Wat ik nog niet had verteld, is dat de jurk heel mooi gevoerd is. Ik heb de lengte van de voering iets korter geknipt dan de peplum (3 cm). Nu hoefde ik alleen nog maar de peplum en de voering mooi af te locken. Ik wilde een mooie lockzoom, dus eerst even oefenen met een restje van de voering. Door de jaren heb ik geleerd het locken niet te haasten en de tijd te nemen om met de onbegrijpelijke instellingen te spelen. Sinds ik dat onder de knie heb, kunnen mijn lockmachine en ik prima met elkaar overweg. En geen zorgen, de voering heb ik natuurlijk netjes met wit garen gelockt!

I forgot to mention that the dress has a white lining, which I cut off about 3 cm shorter that the dress. After that, I only had to finish off the seam with an overlock stitch. I always try it first on a piece of leftover fabric and play a little with the settings to get the best result. Me and my overlock machine have not always been friends, but I have learned to take my time with his incomprehensible settings. And when I stick to that, we get along just fine. And no worries, I stitched the lining with white fabric;).
