Van rok naar gilet / skirt turned into vest

Miskopen zoals deze rok gebeuren gelukkig niet vaak. Ik zag de rok (toen nog ecru), zocht me wild op het web voor de juiste maat, kocht het en droeg het.... welgeteld één keer. Ik dacht dat de kleur gewoon te saai voor mij was en gooide er een paars verfje tegenaan. Toen droeg ik het nóg een keer... mmmm. Ik besloot dat een rigoreuze refashion misschien dé redding was. En zo gebeurde het dat deze rok een gilet werd.

A few years ago I ran into this skirt and, after searching and searching on the web for the right size, I bought the skirt and wore it... once. I figured the colour (ecru) was to blame and threw in a purple dye job. Since then I've worn the skirt exactly one more time... So I decided a radical refashion might be the salvation. And so it happened that the skirt was turned into a vest.

Stap 1
De eerste stap was meteen de meest ingrijpende: de rok uit elkaar halen in losse panden. Ik had al wel een voorlopig idee maar wilde de losse stukken stof zien om een beter beeld te krijgen.

The first step was the most radical: to disassemble the skirt. A thought had already formed in my head, but I needed to get a good look at the pieces of fabric to get a better picture. 

Stap 2
Ik had het idee om de achterkant als rugpand te gebruiken. Omdat dat nog veel te lang was, knipte ik dat af op de gewenste ruglengte. En toen begon ik met het spelden van de panden op de pop, om te zien hoe het zou vallen, en of de schuine delen met het kanten randje (hopelijk) als voorpand konden dienen. 

I wanted to use the back side as the back of my new vest, so I trimmed the fabric at a length of 60 cm. Then I started pinning the pieces on my tailor's dummy to see how I could use the front pieces that had formed the wrap as the new front of the vest. 

Nou, het spelden gaf me al een goed idee van het eindresultaat, ik zag mogelijkheden! Wat trouwens wel grappig is, is dat het woord vest in het Engels en Nederlands verschillende betekenissen heeft. Ons vestje is in het Engels een 'cardigan'. Zover ik weet, bestaat het woord 'gilet' niet echt in het Engels, maar wel in het Frans en daar werd het vooral in de 19e eeuw gebruikt voor wat in het Engels nu een vest (en in het Nederlands gilet) is. Altijd goed om te weten, dit soort dingen:).

Funny, by the way, how the English word 'vest' also exists in Dutch, but is used for the English cardigan. The word 'gilet', which is common in Dutch, is not really used in English (as far as I know). It was used in France back in the 19th century, for what nowadays in English is called a vest. Still following me:)?

Stap 3
Bij het uit elkaar halen van de rok had ik netjes de tailleband afgeknipt. Dat was een soort boordstof en prima band om de hals mee af te werken. Dus dat was mijn volgende stap. Ik had de neklijn opgemeten en op deze lengte (met naadtoeslag) een bandje van 3,5 cm breed afgeknipt. Die spelde en naaide ik vervolgens langs de neklijn. 

When I disassembled the skirt I'd cut out the waistband, which was made of fabric often used for cuffs. Ideal for a band to finish the neckline with. So I measured the length of the neckline, with seam allowance, and cut out a band with a width of 3,5 cm. Then I pinned and sew the band to the neckline.

Stap 4
Vervolgens aan de slag met de voorpanden. Die heb ik iets korter geknipt zodat het een betere vorm kreeg. Ook heb ik daarna de armsgaten geknipt.

Next, I needed to give the vest a better shape. The front pieces were too big, so I trimmed them and I also cut out the armholes. 

Stap 5
Nadat ik vervolgens de schouder- en zijnaden had genaaid, heb ik de armsgaten afgewerkt met een enkele omslag. Hierdoor wordt de naad minder dik en omdat de stof niet rafelt, kan dat prima. Ook de voorpanden werkte ik netjes af met een omslag.

After closing the side and shoulder seams it was time to finish the edges. The fabric was a bit too heavy to turn it twice and since it wouldn't fray, I made a simple turn before I topstitched the armhole and front.

Een beetje paarse styling (tasje is leuk, maar achteraf een beetje to much paars:)) en klaar is het gilet!
